AFAR, ETHIOPIA — Breaking News
A powerful volcanic eruption has been reported at Mount Erta Ale, one of Ethiopia’s most active and iconic volcanoes, located in the scorching lowlands of Dallol in the Danakil Depression. The eruption sent massive plumes of ash and smoke billowing high into the sky, visibly darkening the horizon and drawing immediate attention from regional authorities and geological experts.
Eyewitnesses in the surrounding area described the eruption as “vigorous and continuous,” with glowing lava and intense rumbling observed from several kilometers away. The Danakil Depression—considered one of the hottest and most geologically active places on Earth—is home to Erta Ale’s famous lava lake, which has periodically erupted in recent decades.
Local officials in the Afar Region are assessing the impact of the ash plume on nearby pastoral communities. So far, no casualties have been reported, but residents have been advised to remain alert and avoid areas downwind of the volcano.
Geologists warn that ash emissions may continue over the coming hours as volcanic pressure stabilizes. Aviation authorities are also monitoring airspace conditions to prevent disruptions to regional flight paths.
