H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, President of the African Union Commission, has called for immediate and coordinated international action in response to the rapidly worsening security and humanitarian crisis in Mali.
In a statement issued today, President Mahmoud Ali Youssouf expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and deteriorating conditions in the country, where terrorist groups have imposed blockades, cut access to essential goods, and intensified the suffering of civilians.
He strongly condemned the ongoing attacks targeting innocent civilians, which have caused unacceptable loss of life and further destabilized affected areas. The AU Commission President reaffirmed the African Union’s solidarity with the Government and people of Mali, extending condolences to the families of the victims and reiterating the AU’s unwavering commitment to peace, security, and development across the Sahel region.
President Youssouf also denounced the recent abductions, including the kidnapping of three Egyptian nationals, urging their immediate and unconditional release. He reminded all actors that such actions constitute grave violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.
Calling for a strong, coordinated, and coherent international response, President Youssouf emphasized the need for enhanced cooperation, intelligence sharing, and technical and financial assistance to countries facing terrorist threats in the Sahel. His remarks align with the communiqué of the 1304th AU Ministerial Meeting held on September 30, 2025.
The AU Commission President concluded by reaffirming the African Union’s readiness to support Mali and other Sahel nations during this critical juncture, pledging to provide all necessary assistance to help restore peace, stability, and resilience in the region.
