Addis Ababa (HornCurrent) – Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Dr. Alemu Sime, has called for continued efforts to deliver efficient, transparent, and accountable services in the transport and logistics sector, underscoring its crucial role in supporting other national sectors and improving overall productivity.
The Minister made the remarks during a leadership and planning capacity-building training organized for transport and logistics sector leaders under various thematic areas.
In his closing address, Dr. Alemu emphasized that the sector must overcome challenges related to good governance and maintain its enabling role by ensuring clarity, responsiveness, and transparency in service delivery.
He noted that the transport and logistics sector — encompassing air, land, and maritime transport services — has been demonstrating significant progress in efficiency, modernization, and performance capacity.
Dr. Alemu stated that the Ministry is working with strong focus to improve road safety, pointing out that studies have shown that the main causes of road accidents are related to driver behavior and vehicle technical problems. He said that continuous and sustainable efforts are being made to address these issues and bring about lasting behavioral change.
The Minister highlighted that the transport and logistics sector continues to play a vital enabling role for other sectors, by modernizing services and strengthening the logistics chain through digital infrastructure development.
He also recalled significant national achievements made in recent years, including:
- Supporting the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) by transporting construction materials efficiently and on time,
- Enhancing agricultural productivity by improving soil fertility support and timely delivery of inputs, and
- Advancing digital logistics systems to strengthen efficiency and coordination within the supply chain.
Dr. Alemu concluded by stressing the need for continued coordination, innovation, and teamwork to sustain the sector’s progress and ensure that its enabling contribution to Ethiopia’s development continues effectively.
