Washington, D.C., 16 October 2025 — Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance, H.E. Ahmed Shide, participated in the 114th Meeting of the Ministers and Governors of the Intergovernmental Group of Twenty-Four (G-24), held on the sidelines of the 2025 World Bank and IMF Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C.
The session, chaired by Argentina, focused on “Structural Transformation Policies for Unlocking Growth Potential.” The gathering brought together finance ministers and central bank governors from G-24 member states, alongside key international financial leaders including Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF; Ms. Anna Bjerde, World Bank Group Managing Director for Operations; and Ms. Hanan Morsy, Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist of the UN Economic Commission for Africa, who attended as special guests.
In his intervention, Minister Ahmed Shide underscored the need for “a bigger, better, and fairer multilateral system” that guarantees developing nations a genuine voice and equitable access to global financial resources. He echoed the G-24 communiqué’s call for predictable and timely debt restructuring mechanisms under the G20 Common Framework, while noting the modest progress made in this area.
The Minister also highlighted the importance of concessional financing, renewed multilateralism, and stronger global solidarity, stressing that the international financial system must better serve developing economies—both in times of crisis and in pursuing long-term development goals.
Meanwhile, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Managing Director Anna Bjerde reaffirmed their institutions’ commitment to maintaining robust program engagement with G-24 member countries. They commended ongoing reform efforts across the group and encouraged members to continue advancing policies that promote financial stability, sustainable growth, and inclusive development. Both officials called upon multilateral development banks and private lenders to strengthen collaboration in support of these efforts.
