Ethiopia Launches Its First-Ever Free Trade Zone — A Milestone for Africa

Addis Ababa — Ethiopia today officially inaugurated its first Free Trade Zone (FTZ), marking a historic economic milestone as the first of its kind in Africa.

The launch ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Vice President of the Prosperity Party, H.E. Ato Adem Farah, Minister of Transport and Logistics, Dr. Alemu Sime, and Minister of Trade and Regional Cooperation, Dr. Kassahun Gofe.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Kassahun Gofe emphasized that the new Free Trade Zone will play a major role in facilitating Ethiopia’s export trade and boosting national economic growth. He noted that the zone will enhance Ethiopia’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.

Following the official opening, exports of meat, fruits, coffee, and oil products have already begun to destinations including Kenya, Somalia, and South Africa, utilizing both air and ground transportation networks.

Officials highlighted that the Free Trade Zone is part of Ethiopia’s broader strategy to promote industrialization, attract foreign investment, and expand regional trade integration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
