Addis Ababa — (HornCurrent) — Close sources have told HornCurrent that an armed team allegedly dispatched from the Somali Regional Presidency is operating in Addis Ababa with plans to abduct and assassinate Somali community elders and political opponents who recently travelled to the capital to submit constitutional complaints to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
According to multiple close sources, the group is said to include civilian gang members, elements of regional security forces, and some personnel described as police-aligned or “Fano” elements. Sources named former Somali Region police commissioner Mohamed Ali Hassan and militia leader Abdulahi Kasim Abdi as leading figures in the alleged operation. HornCurrent is publishing these allegations in the public interest and as a matter of urgent security concern; we treat them as serious claims that require prompt, independent investigation.
Sources told HornCurrent the alleged cell has been trying to secure cooperation from some Addis Ababa police officers — including assistance that would allow operatives to wear police uniforms and abduct or misidentify targets — and that financiers have allocated 2,000,000 ETB to the operation. The sources described planned methods including: fatal shootings; staged “car accidents”; illegal abductions while disguised in official uniforms; and indirect poisoning or use of proxy groups. These claims, if true, represent an immediate threat to the safety of residents and visitors in the capital.
HornCurrent has reached out to the Somali Regional Presidency for comment and to the named individuals. We have not yet received a response. Mustafe (Mustafa) Mohammed Omer is the sitting President of the Somali Region; his office and the regional administration must be given the opportunity to answer these allegations.
We are also calling on federal security institutions to act immediately to verify these claims and to protect potential targets. Federal authorities and the public can use the Federal Police’s public contact points to report evidence and request urgent protection: Ethiopian Federal Police (Crime Investigation) — +251 118 886 228; ethiopiafederalpolice@gmail.com.
HornCurrent urges the following immediate steps:
• Federal Police, INSA/NISA, and Addis Ababa Police should urgently investigate these allegations and provide protection for visiting elders and other at-risk individuals.
• Any person in possession of evidence — voice notes, screenshots, bank transfers, names of implicated officers, hotel/arrival details or witness statements — should submit it immediately to federal investigative bodies and to HornCurrent.
• Journalists, civil society and human-rights organisations should demand a transparent inquiry and protection for those named by these sources.
NOTE: HornCurrent is publishing these allegations on the basis of close-source information received in the public interest. We present them as allegations and call on security agencies to investigate them as a matter of urgency. HornCurrent invites the Somali Regional Presidency, the named individuals, Addis Ababa Police and the Federal Police to respond to these claims; responses will be published in full.
