Ethiopia’s Islamic Affairs Leadership Elections Successfully Concluded Nationwide

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The 2017 Ethiopian Islamic Affairs leadership elections have been successfully concluded across the country in a peaceful and orderly manner, according to the Executive Board of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council’s Election Office.

The election process, which began on Nehase 9, 2017 (Ethiopian Calendar), involved the participation of the Muslim community nationwide, including religious scholars (Ulamas), intellectuals, youth, women, and professional associations. The first phase of voting, held at the mosque level, was finalized peacefully by Nehase 11, 2017, with voting continuing until midday to ensure maximum participation.

In a statement sent to EBC, the Election Board expressed its gratitude to the Muslim community for their active involvement in organizing, leading, and safeguarding the integrity of the process. The Board also extended appreciation to the government for its security support, which helped ensure stability during the elections.

The Council further emphasized that the upcoming stages of the elections—from district (woreda) to federal council levels—will be conducted with the same commitment, moral responsibility, and active participation.

The successful completion of this election marks a significant milestone for Ethiopia’s Muslim community, reinforcing democratic representation and the peaceful practice of religious rights across the country.
