Addis Ababa — Ethiopia’s live animal export sector has recorded remarkable growth in the 2017 Ethiopian fiscal year, both in volume and foreign exchange earnings, according to the Ministry of Trade.

Official figures show that 619,294 head of livestock were exported during the year, generating $62.9 million in foreign currency. This performance far exceeded the government’s target of 393,582 head of livestock and $40 million in revenue.

When compared to the 2016 E.C. fiscal year, the sector posted an increase of 346,615 head (127.11%) in volume and an additional $43.45 million (223.44%) in revenue.

Ethiopian Minister of Trade, Kasahun Gofa, attributed the success to improved export facilitation, strengthened partnerships with international buyers, and enhanced veterinary certification processes.

“This achievement reflects the potential of Ethiopia’s livestock sector to contribute significantly to national economic growth,” Kasahun said in a statement posted on his official Facebook account.

Livestock exports remain one of Ethiopia’s key foreign exchange sources, alongside coffee, oilseeds, and khat. The government says it will continue to prioritize the sector by expanding market access, improving transport infrastructure, and ensuring animal health standards meet global requirements.
