DATED: June 2025 – Sokoto, Nigeria
Senior statesman and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El‑Rufai has issued a stark warning: if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) secure victory again in 2027, Nigeria’s social capital may be “completely destroyed”—potentially risking the very existence of the country itself .
Spoken during a grassroots mobilisation meeting in Sokoto hosted by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), El‑Rufai expressed that the prospect of another APC term is a “fight for our lives.” He emphasised that the decision to oppose the ruling party is not driven by personal ambition but by a need to serve and restore the country .
Having defected from APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in March 2025, El‑Rufai has been actively involved in political coalition-building, working to unite opponents of the APC under a single democratic platform ahead of the 2027 general election .
In May and June 2025, he delivered searing criticism of the Tinubu administration, describing it as marked by rising insecurity, economic decline, misuse of revenue, tribal profiling, and widespread nepotism—arguing that the party has strayed far from its founding vision . He also cited polling figures placing Tinubu’s disapproval rating at roughly 91% in both the South‑East and Northern regions, and 78% in Lagos—indicating strong public discontent
