June 15, 2025 – Addis Ababa

Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed reaffirmed the central role of the arts in shaping Ethiopia’s national identity and promoting unity, in a message shared this morning on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“The arts are not merely a form of expression; they are a pillar of national strength and unity,” Dr. Abiy stated. He emphasized the critical function the arts play in preserving cultural heritage, fostering social cohesion, and empowering diverse communities. He also noted their contribution to education by nurturing creativity and critical thinking, while economically driving innovation, tourism, and job creation.

As part of ongoing national efforts to support the arts sector, the Prime Minister convened a high-level discussion session this morning with representatives from the arts community across all regions of Ethiopia. The session aimed to consolidate the outcomes of prior dialogues held at multiple levels and bring key issues into sharper focus.

“These individuals are part of a broader, ongoing dialogue that has taken place across various levels,” Dr. Abiy explained. “Today’s sessions focused on identifying matters that require higher-level attention and intervention, as well as areas where artists themselves must take an active role.”

The government’s engagement with the arts sector is expected to continue in the coming weeks, with policy discussions and potential initiatives aimed at addressing structural challenges and unlocking new opportunities for artists nationwide.

This move underscores the administration’s broader commitment to inclusive development that values cultural and creative contributions as essential components of national progress.
