Albert Ojwang, a 31-year-old teacher and social activist, has died in police custody under suspicious circumstances, sparking national outrage in Kenya.
Albert, known for his outspoken posts on Facebook and X, had previously accused a senior police official of corruption and misconduct. Following these posts, he was arrested in western Kenya and later transferred to a prison in Nairobi, over 250 kilometers away, without being presented to court, according to Africa News.
On Monday, Kenyan police announced his death, claiming that he died after hitting his head against a wall in his cell. However, this version of events has been questioned by his family and legal team.
“We saw the body yesterday. He had multiple injuries on his arms, swelling on his forehead, and there was blood coming from his nose and ears,” said Julius, the family’s lawyer, speaking to local media.
Kenyan President William Ruto condemned the incident and urged the public to wait for the results of an independent investigation, warning against premature judgments that could interfere with justice. In response to the public outcry, five police officers have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
The case has intensified scrutiny of police conduct and raised concerns about freedom of expression and the treatment of government critics in Kenya.
