Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 23, 2026
The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) has reaffirmed its commitment to regional peace and stability through its ongoing peacekeeping missions in Abyei and Somalia.
Abyei Mission
According to the ENDF statement issued on Yekatit 15, 2018 (Ethiopian Calendar), Ethiopia was deployed for the first time as the sole peacekeeping force in Abyei, a disputed territory between Sudan and South Sudan.
Abyei, known for its fertile land and inhabited mainly by the Dinka and Misseriya communities, has historically experienced recurring tensions alternating between conflict and peaceful coexistence.
The ENDF noted that Ethiopia was entrusted by the United Nations not only to deploy troops but also to provide military equipment and logistical support, while assuming overall force command responsibilities.
The statement emphasized that Ethiopia’s disciplined and reliable peacekeeping performance in Abyei has earned lasting respect and goodwill from the Sudanese people. Beyond security duties, Ethiopian troops have provided humanitarian assistance, including food, water, and essential medical services to local communities.
The Sudanese public, the statement added, frequently expresses appreciation for Ethiopia’s role in upholding law and order, preventing displacement, reducing intercommunal violence, and restoring peace in the region.
Somalia Mission
The ENDF also highlighted its long-standing peace support operations in Somalia, Ethiopia’s neighboring country with which it shares an extensive border.
The statement referenced the 1977–78 war initiated under former Somali leader Siad Barre, noting that the conflict left lasting instability in the region. Despite ongoing security challenges, Ethiopia continues to play a significant role in supporting peace and stabilization efforts in Somalia.
Currently, a large number of Ethiopian peacekeeping forces are deployed across various Somali states, working closely with local communities to maintain security and stability. The ENDF underscored that this reflects Ethiopia’s strong commitment not only to its own national security but also to peace in neighboring countries.
Commitment to Regional Peace
The ENDF concluded that Ethiopia’s defense forces have proven through action that they are a preferred force for peace and development in the region.
“Peace for Ethiopia, peace for the peoples of the world, and peace for all,” the statement concluded.
