A high-profile corruption case involving former Commissioner of the National Disaster Risk Management Commission, Mitiku Kasa, has concluded with heavy prison sentences handed down to him and his family members.
The court found Mitiku Kasa and his family guilty of embezzling large amounts of humanitarian aid funds and relief supplies. The verdict brings to an end a lengthy legal process that exposed widespread corruption within the household.
Mitiku Kasa was sentenced to 13 years in prison. His wife received 8 years and 4 months, while their daughter was sentenced to 5 years and 3 months.
According to the court documents, the family siphoned off emergency aid resources—including food and funds—and diverted them for personal gain. Investigations revealed that the stolen assets were used to construct houses and multi-storey buildings in Addis Ababa and other locations.
Authorities described the case as one of the most serious corruption scandals involving officials responsible for managing disaster relief operations.
