Ethiopia: Former President of Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Grand Mufti Haji Umar Idris, Passes Away.

Addis Abeba – Grand Mufti Haji Umar Idris, the former President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC), has passed away following a short illness for which he had been receiving medical treatment, the Council announced late this evening.

In its official statement, the EIASC described the late Mufti as “a great figure and a father to all in our country,” emphasizing that his passing “is a sorrow shared by the entire people of our nation.”

The Grand Mufti, widely respected for his wisdom, humility, and lifelong service to the Islamic community, played a central role in strengthening religious institutions and promoting interfaith harmony throughout Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed his heartfelt condolences, stating that he was “deeply saddened by the passing of the late Mufti.” The Prime Minister further remarked, “We will always remember his efforts to bring together people of different backgrounds and to ensure that the Islamic Affairs Supreme Council gained legal recognition.” He extended his sympathy to the Mufti’s family, colleagues, and the wider Ethiopian Muslim community.

The Council confirmed that the late Mufti’s funeral will be conducted at the state level, “in a manner that honors his national and religious contributions,” while observing Islamic rites.

Grand Mufti Haji Umar Idris leaves behind a lasting legacy as a unifying figure and a voice of moral guidance who dedicated his life to peace, justice, and the spiritual advancement of Ethiopian Muslims.

May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and comfort his family and followers.
