Ethiopia to Begin Duty-Free Exports to African Countries under AfCFTA

Addis Ababa – Ethiopia is set to start exporting its products duty-free to member states of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), according to the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration.

Trade and Regional Integration Minister Dr. Kassahun Gofe announced the decision in a press briefing following Ethiopia’s participation in the sixth round of World Trade Organization (WTO) working party meetings held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Dr. Kassahun explained that beginning next week, Ethiopia will, for the first time, ship products duty-free to AfCFTA member countries. The official launch of Ethiopia’s participation in AfCFTA’s free trade implementation is scheduled for September 29, in the presence of the AfCFTA Secretary-General and other stakeholders.

“From the start date onward, Ethiopia will export its products without tariffs to African free trade partners, which will enhance the country’s trade competitiveness,” the Minister said.

Previously, Ethiopia’s exports to Kenya—such as maize and sorghum—were subject to tariffs of up to 15 %. Under the new arrangement, these and other products will enter Kenya duty-free, beginning with the first shipment.

The Minister further noted that the AfCFTA agreement goes beyond tariff reduction, carrying strategic significance for Africa’s long-term growth, integration, and prosperity.
