Somalia Faces New Political Crisis as Opposition Leaders Condemn Crackdown

Somalia has entered a fresh wave of political turmoil after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s government began arresting opposition figures and was accused of land grabbing from civilians.

Former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed issued a strong condemnation late Thursday, describing the arrests of prominent community leaders in Mogadishu as unlawful and dangerous for national stability. Among those detained were former Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Omar Ali Roble, businessman Ali Haji Iman, and trader Abdulqadir Mahmoud Ilmi (Bulaale).

“I strongly condemn the illegal abduction carried out tonight by government security agencies. This is an insult to governance, a violation of citizens’ dignity, and a direct threat to peace and stability. Those detained must be released immediately,” Sharif Sheikh Ahmed said in a statement, warning security forces not to be used for political repression.

Former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khayre also denounced the arrests, linking them to the ongoing dispute over the forced displacement of families from Siinaay market and surrounding neighborhoods.

“These individuals were targeted simply because they stood up for the rights of displaced people. Their arrest is proof of the government’s intolerance and weakness. Intimidation and abuse of power can only be stopped by a united popular force,” Khayre stated.

Citing Somalia’s Provisional Constitution, Khayre stressed that freedom of speech and political expression are guaranteed rights. He further called on citizens to take part in nationwide demonstrations planned for Saturday, urging the public to “show people power against land grabbing, displacement, and political repression.”

The escalating tensions mark one of the most serious political challenges yet for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration, as opposition leaders mobilize public protests against his government.
