JIGJIGA – Tonight, authorities in Jigjiga have begun relocating the historic statue of Sayid Mohamed Abdille Hassan, which has stood for above decade at the city’s central square. All major roads leading to the site have been temporarily closed to traffic as the operation takes place under tight security.
Regional officials had announced months earlier that the statue would be moved to a newly designated location, unveiling a modern design for the new square.
The relocation comes just days before Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is scheduled to visit Jigjiga later this week.
