Major General Tashome has made a bold declaration regarding Ethiopia’s long-disputed access to the Red Sea. Speaking publicly, he stressed that Ethiopia must reclaim Assab, the strategic port city in Eritrea, regardless of the cost.
“Assab lies on the Red Sea corridor of Ethiopia. A transitional government, without full legitimacy, made decisive concessions. Many countries have criticized us, asking: ‘Why was it not returned?’ In reality, the Red Sea should never have been separated from us. Today, the issue of the Red Sea is an urgent matter for our nation, and we must restore it—whatever the price may be,” the General said.
Observers note that this is the first time a high-ranking Ethiopian officer has openly and directly stated such a position on Assab, signaling a potential shift in the country’s strategic stance toward Eritrea and the Red Sea.
