Somali Region Crisis Deepens as People Reject Mustafe Omar’s Administration

HornCurrent News Desk – August 25, 2025

The crisis in the Somali Region of Ethiopia continues to escalate, with reports of mass arrests, torture, and killings emerging from several towns including Kabridahar, Marsin, Fik, Jigjiga, Dhanaan, East Imay, and Garbo.

Local residents told HornCurrent.com that the crackdown comes after Somali Region President Mustafe Omar allegedly declared what they describe as a “revenge war” against members of the Abdile clan, which he associates with former regional leader Abdi Iley.

“Mustafe and his clan leaders, like Fowzi, have declared war against the Abdile clan, and this revenge is being carried out by government forces,”

said one resident interviewed by HornCurrent.com this morning.

Allegations of Political Revenge

The accusations stem from the killing of Mustafe Omar’s brother nearly seven years ago, which some claim is now being used as a justification for collective punishment against the Abdile community. Witnesses report that security forces are targeting protesters and ordinary civilians alike, fueling fear and anger across the region.

Government Silence

HornCurrent.com attempted to reach officials from the Somali Region’s communication bureau and the regional police commissioner for clarification. However, repeated calls went unanswered, and their phones remain switched off.

Growing Instability

Observers warn that the Somali Region is sliding into widespread instability as protests intensify and clan-based violence rises. Elders and community leaders have repeatedly urged the federal government to intervene, fearing that unchecked abuses could ignite broader inter-clan conflict and a humanitarian crisis.

HornCurrent.com will continue to investigate and provide updates as the situation develops.
