In a strongly worded press conference held in Addis Ababa, Somali Region elders voiced their deep frustration with the leadership of regional president Mustafe M. Omar, accusing him of abandoning the ethics of leadership and acting recklessly.
The elders, who traveled from different parts of the Somali Region, declared that Mustafe Omar is “not behaving like a president but rather like a reckless activist”—citing repeated incidents of public insults directed at respected community elders and clan leaders.
Their remarks follow a controversial regional meeting recently organized by the Somali State in Addis Ababa, during which President Mustafe allegedly used “below-the-belt language” against Somali elders based in the capital. According to the elders, such behavior demonstrates a disregard for traditional respect and undermines the dignity of Somali leadership.
“A leader who insults his own elders and community cannot continue to represent the Somali people,” the elders said in their joint statement.
In their strongest opposition yet, the elders demanded that Mustafe Omar be removed from his position, declaring that he is “no longer deserving to continue as president.”
The development adds to mounting criticism of Mustafe Omar’s administration, which has faced accusations of mismanagement, political exclusion, and growing discontent within the Somali Region.
