Ethiopia to Build $500M Mega Stadium Ahead of AFCON 2029 Bid

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Ethiopia has unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art 62,000-seat mega stadium in Addis Ababa, marking one of the largest sports infrastructure projects in the country’s history.

The $500 million facility, inspired by Ethiopia’s iconic woven baskets and coffee beans, will serve as a multi-purpose venue, hosting football, rugby, athletics, and large-scale concerts.

Construction is scheduled for completion in 2027, positioning the stadium as a potential flagship venue for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2029, should Ethiopia secure hosting rights.

Sports analysts say this project signals Ethiopia’s ambition to reassert itself as a hub for continental sporting events and cultural showcases.

With modern facilities and unique design elements rooted in Ethiopian heritage, the stadium is expected to not only elevate sports in the country but also stimulate tourism, job creation, and national pride.
