Ethiopia Moves Toward a Paperless Digital System, Says Innovation Minister

Addis Ababa – Ethiopia is working to build a fully digital and paperless nation, according to Minister of Innovation and Technology, Dr. Belete Molla.

In an interview with ETV, Dr. Belete said the Ministry was established to transform Ethiopia into a modern, digital, and innovation-driven country. He noted that as part of this reform, 500 services have officially gone digital as of today.

The Minister added that his office is working to completely eliminate paper-based services, and similar efforts are underway across other government institutions. Ethiopia currently spends more than 40 billion birr on paper procurement annually. A full transition to a paperless digital system is expected to drastically reduce these costs.

The initiative is part of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 Strategy, which has already launched several projects since its rollout. Dr. Belete also highlighted the recent introduction of “Mesob,” a one-stop digital service platform, now operational to improve government efficiency and accessibility.
