Somalia Reaffirms Commitment to Maritime Security at UN Security Council Debate

New York, USA – At the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) High-Level Open Debate on Maritime Security, Somalia underscored the importance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the foundation for peaceful and cooperative use of the world’s oceans.

Representing Somalia, the country’s delegation stressed that adherence to international maritime laws is critical for promoting trust among nations and enabling effective global action against maritime challenges.

“Respecting these rules, alongside safeguarding state sovereignty, is essential for building confidence and ensuring the success of collective efforts,” Somalia’s statement affirmed.

The debate, attended by member states, UN officials, and maritime experts, focused on pressing issues such as piracy, illegal fishing, trafficking, and environmental threats to global waters. Somalia’s position reflects its continued commitment to both regional and international cooperation in ensuring maritime safety and security.
