The Prosperity Party’s Central Committee has withdrawn the recently approved administrative restructuring plan for the Somali Region.
During the committee session, Somali Region representative Dr. Abdiwasac commented:
“While we respect the right of regions to self-govern and make their own decisions, in the past we criticized the former administration for approving 100 districts without proper study. Now we are repeating the same. On what research is this based? Is there funding for it? I know the region well—existing districts still need improvement, and there is no budget for the new ones.”
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, responding to the matter, stated:
“Both Oromia and Somali regions should remain as they were before the changes. Everyone should stay within their own jurisdiction, whether in Moyale or elsewhere. We are already struggling to fund existing districts—how will we sustain new zones? Stop creating new ones. The regional administration and your federal representatives should work together and consult.”
Speaking on corruption within the regions, Abiy used a symbolic analogy:
“Corruption has not yet reached the point where traders can buy our political direction, but there is a lot of theft in the regions. It is like weeds in a garden. In order to deal with it, we must be careful not to cut the good plants along with the bad—but we will uproot the weeds from the roots.”
Horncurrent.com also spoke with Somali intellectuals and elders, who strongly welcomed the decision to withdraw the restructuring plan. They encouraged Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to continue his efforts to address leadership failures in the Somali Region.
