U.S. Ambassador Reaffirms Support for Ethiopia’s Health Sector in Meeting with Minister of Health

02 August 2025 | Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

In a show of continued partnership and commitment, U.S. Ambassador Ervin J. Massinga met with H.E. Dr. Mekdes Daba, Ethiopia’s Minister of Health, to reaffirm the U.S. government’s long-standing support for Ethiopia’s health sector—one of the largest pillars of U.S. foreign assistance to the country.

The high-level meeting also served to celebrate the recent renovation of Ethiopia’s national health hotline center, accessible via the short code 952. This essential service offers health information, counseling, and psychosocial support to the Ethiopian public and is considered a vital tool in expanding health access across the nation.

“The United States is proud to work in close partnership with the Ministry of Health,” the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa stated, “to strengthen Ethiopia’s health infrastructure and community outreach.”

Ambassador Massinga underscored the United States’ commitment to supporting Ethiopia through innovative and sustainable programs, particularly by encouraging and leveraging local innovation led by the Ministry of Health.

This partnership aligns with the broader U.S. foreign policy goal of promoting self-reliance, allowing Ethiopia to lead its development journey with strong institutions and capable leadership at the helm.

The U.S. government remains a major partner in Ethiopia’s health sector, supporting areas including maternal and child health, disease prevention, emergency response, and health system strengthening.
