Ethiopian and Djiboutian Officials Praise China-Built Railway for Boosting Regional Integration

03 August 2025 | Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Top officials from Ethiopia and Djibouti have praised the Ethiopia-Djibouti standard gauge railway, a flagship infrastructure project built by China, for its transformative role in promoting regional trade and economic integration in the Horn of Africa.

Ethiopia’s Minister of Transport described the 752-kilometer electrified railway as a tangible success story of effective transnational collaboration. The railway links Addis Ababa to the Port of Djibouti—Ethiopia’s main trade gateway—providing a critical lifeline for imports and exports.

The comments came during a joint inspection and review event, where both Ethiopian and Djiboutian officials acknowledged the railway’s contribution to faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly transportation, helping to reduce transit times and trade costs.

“This project is a powerful example of what regional cooperation and global partnership can achieve,” said Ethiopia’s Transport Minister.

Built with Chinese financing and expertise, the Ethiopia-Djibouti railway has significantly improved logistical connectivity, serving as a cornerstone of the region’s economic development efforts.
