Addis Abeba, Ethiopia – HornCurrent.com – August 1, 2025 — Ethiopia and Djibouti have signed a new agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation on regional peace and security, marking a renewed commitment under their Joint Defense Committee framework.
The agreement was signed on Thursday at the Skylight Hotel in Addis Abeba, following the 11th regular session of the Joint Defense Committee, which officially commenced on July 29. The high-level meeting brought together senior military officials from both nations to review ongoing initiatives and chart new strategies for defense collaboration, intelligence sharing, and the fight against terrorism and human trafficking.
Major General Teshome Gemechu, Director General of Foreign Relations and Military Cooperation at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Defense, and Major General Abdurahman Abdi, Advisor to the Chief of Staff of the Djiboutian Armed Forces, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective countries.
Speaking at the ceremony, Maj. Gen. Teshome highlighted the strategic significance of regional defense partnerships. “Cooperating on issues that ensure mutual benefit as friendly countries in this region plays an irreplaceable role in overcoming regional challenges,” he said, as quoted by the Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF).
Officials from both sides commended the progress made under previous agreements, citing effective joint efforts over the past year. The new deal is expected to deepen coordination across various domains of security and defense, particularly in safeguarding shared infrastructure and preventing cross-border threats.
Maj. Gen. Teshome further noted that security institutions from both countries will jointly oversee the implementation of the agreement, emphasizing the mutually beneficial nature of the partnership.
On his part, Maj. Gen. Abdurahman Abdi reaffirmed Djibouti’s commitment to the defense alliance, calling the new agreement “highly significant” for maintaining regional stability and enhancing strategic ties between the two Horn of Africa neighbors.
The Ethiopia-Djibouti Joint Defense Committee continues to serve as a vital mechanism for advancing peace and security in the region, reinforcing long-standing diplomatic and military relations between the two countries.
