Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed officially launched the seventh edition of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative early Thursday morning with a bold goal to plant 700 million seedlings in a single day.
In a message shared on his official Facebook page, the Prime Minister expressed his enthusiasm and called on citizens across the nation to participate actively in this ambitious environmental effort.
“We kicked off this year’s one-day #GreenLegacy planting early this morning. Our goal for the 7th year: 700 million seedlings. Let’s achieve it together!” Dr. Abiy wrote in English.
He also shared the message in both Amharic and Afaan Oromo, underlining the inclusive nature of the initiative and its national importance.
The Green Legacy Initiative, launched in 2019, aims to combat environmental degradation, promote reforestation, and address the effects of climate change. Over the past six years, billions of trees have been planted across Ethiopia with strong participation from communities, schools, government offices, and international partners.
“This demonstrates that Ethiopia, when it envisions big, can achieve great things by mobilizing and uniting its people,” the Prime Minister emphasized.
This year’s campaign is not only a continuation of environmental rehabilitation efforts but also a symbol of national unity and civic responsibility. Officials expect high turnout across all regions, with logistical support prepared to facilitate mass participation.
As the country faces pressing ecological and climate challenges, the Green Legacy campaign remains one of the federal government’s flagship environmental projects, earning recognition from various international organizations for its scale and impact.
