Belarusian President Lukashenko Reaffirms Strong Support for Ethiopia’s Sea Access and Deepens Bilateral Ties

Minsk, Belarus – President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus has reaffirmed his country’s strong political and economic support for Ethiopia, following Belarus’ public backing of Ethiopia’s ambition to secure access to a sea gate.

In his latest remarks, President Lukashenko stated that Belarus-Ethiopia relations have significantly strengthened, particularly after Belarus openly supported Ethiopia’s push for maritime access.

“Ethiopia is one of the most important countries in East Africa for us,” Lukashenko said, emphasizing that Belarus is ready to enhance cooperation in technology, agriculture, and engineering sectors.

The Belarusian leader also declared his government’s readiness to assist Ethiopia with agricultural machinery, technology transfer, and training programs for Ethiopian professionals, signaling a new era of practical partnership.

This follows Lukashenko’s bold statement in October 2024, where he openly supported Ethiopia’s aspiration for sea access. According to Belarusian state media, the president said:

“Those who oppose Ethiopia’s desire to secure a sea gate are complete fools. Through war or negotiation, Ethiopia will reach a sea gate. It would certainly be better if it happens peacefully.”

The statement was widely circulated and praised in Ethiopian media and among policymakers, who viewed it as rare and strong international support for Ethiopia’s long-standing maritime aspirations.

The warming ties between Minsk and Addis Ababa signal a broader shift in Ethiopia’s foreign policy diversification, as the country seeks strategic partnerships beyond traditional Western and Gulf allies.
