Getachew Reda, the former President of the Tigray Interim Regional Government and a prominent Tigrayan political figure, has issued a sharp condemnation of what he calls a “so-called alliance” between elements within the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), factions of the Tigray Defense Forces (TDF), and the regime of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.
In a powerful statement posted on his official Facebook page, Getachew warned that the alleged alliance threatens to plunge Tigray into renewed internal conflict and betrays the region’s long-term aspirations for peace and autonomy.
“The alliance has never had any tangible objective beyond granting the Eritrean dictator peace of mind by turning Tigray into the principal battlefield,” he wrote.
Eritrean Conditions and Strategic Subordination
According to Getachew, the alliance is dependent on a series of conditions dictated by Eritrea:
- Avoiding any effort to reclaim Western Tigray, to avoid provoking the Fano militia
- No mention of Tigray’s right to statehood
- Full endorsement of the Algiers Agreement
- Recruitment of military-age youth to be trained by Eritrean forces
He characterized the relationship as a client-patron arrangement, with the Eritrean regime treating Tigrayan actors as junior and disposable partners. He added that President Isaias has made it clear to foreign diplomats that he has no genuine commitment to support “the leaders of Woyane.”
Warning of Military Escalation in Southern Tigray
Getachew also accused the reactionary faction within the TPLF and TDF of planning a new military offensive in Southern and Southeastern Tigray during the rainy season. He described the move as a desperate and destructive attempt to seize political power by force.
“At a time when the focus should be on peace and rebuilding, this group is pushing for internal war. It’s a crisis of their own making, and now they are trying to escape it by creating a new one,” he stated.
Call for Public Rejection and Accountability
In his closing remarks, the former interim president urged Tigrayans to reject what he described as an illegitimate and dangerous strategy. He assigned responsibility for any coming conflict to:
- The reactionary clique within the TPLF
- Senior TDF military commanders
- The current President of the Tigray Interim Administration
Analysts view Getachew’s statement as a bold and public escalation of the growing internal divisions within Tigray’s political and military leadership.
