Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) Central Committee Convenes Amid National Crises to Deliberate on War, Economy, and Path to 2026 Election

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – July 19, 2025 – The Central Committee of the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), a major opposition party in Ethiopia, commenced a crucial two-day regular meeting today to address the escalating political, economic, and security crises facing the country and to chart a future course for the party.

The first day of the congress, July 19, is dedicated to internal capacity building and strategic planning. Central Committee members are participating in specialized training sessions focused on three key areas designed to strengthen the party’s leadership and organizational effectiveness. These sessions are also geared towards shaping the future direction of the OFC in a rapidly changing and challenging political landscape.

The agenda for the second day, July 20, will shift to an in-depth analysis of the grave challenges confronting the Oromo people, Ethiopia, and the wider Horn of Africa region. High on the agenda are discussions on the ongoing war and profound lack of security that has devastated communities, the severe economic hardship exacerbated by the government’s economic reform program, widespread youth unemployment, and pervasive systemic corruption.

Central to these deliberations will be the party’s strategy for the upcoming 2026 national election. The OFC is expected to formalize its demands for the government to take concrete and verifiable steps to open up the political space as a prerequisite for a free, fair, and credible election. The party maintains that without such foundational changes, a genuine democratic transition remains impossible.

The meeting is expected to conclude with the adoption of a formal statement outlining the party’s resolutions, future directives, and its demands to the government, the people of Ethiopia, and the international community.
