Addis Ababa – Religious leaders from various faiths in Ethiopia are calling for a nationwide culture of dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, emphasizing that differences should be addressed through conversation—not violence.
This call comes in response to a recent peace mission in Mekelle, Tigray, led by a delegation of senior religious figures. The group, representing Ethiopia’s major religious institutions, visited the Tigray region and held high-level discussions with the interim administration.
During the visit, the delegation met with General Tadesse Worede, president of the Tigray Interim Administration, and other key regional leaders and stakeholders. The discussions centered on reinforcing peaceful coexistence and building trust among communities.
Haji Ibrahim Tufa, President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, told the Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) that the religious delegation emphasized the importance of rejecting violence and embracing inclusive dialogue. “We made it clear that differences must be resolved through peaceful means. We’ve seen willingness from the regional leadership to move forward in this direction,” said Haji Ibrahim.
The delegation also shared a unified message from Ethiopia’s religious communities—Christian, Muslim, and others—calling for unity, mutual respect, and reconciliation across the country. They expressed their commitment to contributing to peace-building efforts through continued engagement with both communities and leadership.
According to Haji Ibrahim, the ongoing religious institutions’ conference will further promote peace efforts by encouraging dialogue in other conflict-affected and tension-prone areas. “Developing a culture of discussion over division is not just necessary in Tigray, but across Ethiopia,” he stressed.
The stakeholders in Tigray reportedly welcomed the engagement, expressing optimism about resolving outstanding issues through inclusive dialogue.
As Ethiopia continues to recover from years of internal conflict, the involvement of religious institutions is seen as a vital pillar in rebuilding trust and encouraging grassroots peacebuilding across the regions.
