Addis Ababa, Ethiopia — The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), H.E. Workneh Gebeyehu, held a high-level and productive meeting today with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mohamud Ali Yousuf.

The discussions centered on enhancing coordination between the African Union (AU) and Regional Economic Communities (RECs), with IGAD reaffirming its leadership role as Chair of the Inter-REC Coordination Platform. Both leaders emphasized the essential role RECs play as foundational building blocks of the African Union integration agenda.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing conflict in Sudan, along with other urgent peace and security challenges affecting the Horn of Africa and the broader region. The two leaders agreed on actionable measures to improve joint efforts and coordination in responding to these crises.

In a statement shared via his official X account, Workneh highlighted the importance of unified regional approaches to conflict resolution and institutional cooperation, reaffirming IGAD’s commitment to regional stability.

The meeting marks a renewed commitment by regional and continental institutions to work closely in addressing Africa’s most pressing peace and security issues.
