Nairobi, Kenya — Kenyan President William Ruto has strongly condemned the death of Albert Ojwang, a man who died while in police custody under suspicious circumstances. The president described the incident as “heartbreaking and unacceptable” and called for a swift and transparent investigation.
“This tragic occurrence, at the hands of police, is heartbreaking and unacceptable,” President Ruto said in a statement on Wednesday. He urged law enforcement agencies to cooperate fully in order to facilitate a “swift, transparent and credible investigation.”
Ojwang had reportedly been arrested over social media posts accusing a senior police official, the Deputy Inspector-General, of corruption. Police initially claimed he died by suicide, stating he fatally injured himself by hitting his head against a wall inside his cell.
However, a medical examination released Tuesday cast serious doubt on the suicide narrative, concluding that it was unlikely he died by self-inflicted injuries.
“I fully expect that the truth about what happened to Ojwang will be established in due course and that justice will be served,” Ruto added.
Ojwang’s death has sparked public outrage, with growing criticism of police conduct circulating widely on social media. Small-scale protests have erupted in parts of Nairobi, as citizens demand accountability and justice.
The incident has reignited national debates about police brutality and the urgent need for reform within Kenya’s law enforcement system.
